Hi ! are you happy there ? girls or boys ? applying for K for a DD...was wondering what your thoughts are on the school, how is activity incorporated ( no outside space) and ideas on where the 8th graders go to HS ? thanks :) [ Reply | More ]

Had a great time there. There is a yard on 22st and a backyard at 28 street, so there is outdoor space. Winter gym in Parish Hall at Lower School and Upper School has a gym. Lower school is a warmer experience. As for high school, most attend TACHS schools (Catholic schools) but girls have the advantage by attending Catholic school of a separate application process and timeline (before the regular pool) and access to special scholarships at Sacred Heard Heart and Marymount so if you are interested in those schools this is a good place to be. About the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the class qualify and most get offers. Last years graduates almost all to CAtholic and private, very few to public; this years class should see about half to public, based on expressed interest. Interesting how different classes have different personalities. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Hypothetical. DD gets shut out of all girls schools. Attends PS6 instead. Due to her b-day, has to go into First Grade instead of K. If I want to try to apply out for 3rd or 4th grade for example; would she apply into 4th grade from 3rd grade public. [ - ] Our boys, ages 9 and 12, have known these other two brothers the same ages since they were little. For quite a few years they've gotten together to hang out and we've become friendly with the parents, and have exchanged watching each others' kids quite a bit. In the past year or so, both of my boys have seemed to lose interest in playing with them, even though they still frequently ask to get together and the older one regularly texts my older ds asking if he wants to get together, which he never says yes to. I know this is just a natural development but I can't help feeling kind of bad every time they ask and we decline. Just ran into them in the park and you could see they were excited to see our boys but at that point they just wanted to go home. Obviously there's no question here, just sharing my musings on the subject... 46 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

op: How are you gleaning that from what I said? Actually, MY older ds is a bit of a self-proclaimed nerd (and proud of it, lol)....I just think he doesn't feel like things "click" anymore (not his words, just what I'm guessing from what I observe). [ Reply | More ]

I gleaned that because you said this kid texts your DS and DS doesn't respond. It sounds like this other kid is a nerdy wannabe and your DS isn't. but you say it's the reverse, which is interesting [ Reply | More ]

op: hmmm, I guess I didn't interpret texting someone to ask them to get together as nerdy. Although I guess he could come across a little needy, perhaps? I've talked to my ds about how it's important to always respond to someone when they text you and that maybe he should get together with him? But I can't exactly force him to do that at this age. op: I'm 47, and to me, it does seem rude to not respond to a text when the person is asking you to get together. Maybe this is a generational thing and what my ds is doing is considered ok? I'm just thinking of how the other kid must feel. [ Reply | More ]

^also, my older ds started puberty earlier than most of his friends, and seems to be on a different plane than many of them right now, so it's made some of his friendships from elementary school a little more awkward. [ Reply | More ]

op: nope, he's a younger one in his grade (fall birthday) and at 10 my younger ds informed me that his big brother had pubic hair. By eleven he was getting pimples, underarm hair and his voice started changing. Now at 12 he seems like he's not the same age as a lot of his friends :/ [ Reply | More ]

Yes, the older ones go to different schools now. When they are around each other they get along ok, but I can tell my son doesn't seem too enthusiastic about getting together. The more I think about it, I had friendships fade at various times in my childhood; kinda surprised that everyone's zeroing in on that like it's so unusual! [ Reply | More ]

op: WOW, way to take this off in another direction. Firstly, my kids are not being "assholes", and I'm expressing concern about how other kids may feel. If that makes me a loser and an asshole, then I don't know what to say. You, on the other hand, do not sound like a mature or thoughtful parent in the least. [ Reply | More ]

or: struck a chord. I called your kids assholes. but if you are so worried about the other kids you tell your kids to be kind to them and make some time in their schedules to hang out with them or have the decency to respond to their texts since they've known each other forever. if your kids aren't complaining and you like the other parents what's the problem? I went to the same school K-12 and I remember this friendship shifting business. It was due to changing interests and maturity, usually not meanness or bad behavior. I wouldn't push too hard on your DS, that could backfire. [ Reply | More ]

Family friends are important. If you and dh get along with the parents, you should continue to get together as families and just as couples even if the boys don't get together one on one. Kids change and go through phases. They don't have to always be best friends but when they are older they will appreciate having people in their life who have always been there. More importantly, you and dh need friends and you shouldn't be so quick to drop friends just because your kids aren't in the mood to be with their kids right now. [ Reply | More ]

op: Thanks for your response. I totally agree. We still are friends with the parents and continue to reach out with invitations to hang out, as do they. Although I wonder if our sons continue to turn down their sons, will they eventually pull away from us as well? We don't have a very close, personal-type friendship with them; it's the kind of thing where if we weren't parents of kids the same ages our paths would have never crossed. [ Reply | More ]

OR: ok, then 2 things: 1) tell your dcs they don't have to get together with these boys alone but they do have to politely decline all invites and they have to make an effort to enjoy their company when you are all together as families. 2) address it head on with the mom next time you talk. Just say "I hate that the boys seem to be a little distant now that they're in different schoops. I hope this won't ever come in the way of our friendship because we really like you." Sounds like the parents are more invested in the kids' friendships while you are more interested in the parents. By age 12, and earlier, I think kids can choose who to hang out with. They see and hear a lot more than you might, and if your kids just don't like these boys, I don't think you should make them hang out a lot. I have boys of similar ages. Friendships change, and if you and the parents stay close, the kids will resume their relationship when it's time. [ Reply | More ]
