OK I'm the OP on that post. It depends on what kind of pony. If it's a pony that doesn't do much of anything, have at it. If it's a highly trained pony who competes on a regional and national level, it makes no sense to keep that pony on hay in a backyard just because you want to see it. They have been trained, that's their work. Horses enjoy their work and become frantic and self-destructive when they are too bored. [ Reply | More ]

THIS if your child has outgrown the pony, it needs to go to a new child. If your puppy is old and ready to retire, then you can keep the pony and let it retire, if you can afford it. [ Reply | More ]

I get AARP magazine and there was a recent segment on "the buddy I'll never forget" meaning military guys. There was a 92 year old who recounted stories of his best friend on the USS Indianapolis. The ship was torpedoed and sank beneath them, and all these kids (the same age as my own sons) were thrown into the water. For 4 days they had no food or water and the sharks fed on them. On the 4th day a rescue raft had been dropped but before the author swam towards it, he watched his "buddy" being taken down by a shark. They were all 18-20 year old boys. [ Reply | More ]

She's nearly 16 so not exactly a child, just the nature of the sport. But teenage girls like her are in love with their horses. Unfortunately, she's aged out of being able to compete on him. USEF rules. It would be a tragic waste of money and costly training to turn a well-trained pony into a "pet" ... plus costs over 1K a month to board. She could keep him and never compete again, or let another young person take advantage of his training while she can move on to a horse. (For those who don't know, all ponies are horses, not all horses are ponies.) [ Reply | More ]

OP. No, they don't do that anymore. If a horse has outlasted its worth, it's euthanized. They cost too much to maintain. If it's worth anything, it's sold. We were lucky once in that we had a mare that went lame (laminitis) but she had good bloodlines so we "sold" her for a $1 to someone who bred her. She had a lovely filly recently (I think I posted the name - Stable Genius by Invitation Only, barn name "Genie") and hopefully she'll prove profitable for that owner. But that kind of operation was not in our cards. [ Reply | More ]

Edit: there are actually other alternatives such as putting to pasture which is around $300 a month to just have someone keep your horse in a rural area and send you a picture ... but I'm not entirely convinced they don't just euthanize the horse and send the 120 pictures they take over the first few months in different weather conditions. A friend did this - we haven't had to do this. She's always been suspicious. She's paid nearly 30K for the horse she put out "to pasture" down in South Carolina. [ Reply | More ]

It’s also changed A LOT from a generation ago. I grew up riding out of a nice stable in MA. Leased various ponies and did the summer New England circuit (Mt Snow, Saratoga et cetera). It wasn’t cheap but wasn’t necessary to fly to Ocala in the winter. My husband and I decided we didn’t want our daughter going down the path because we could buy a second home fornthe cost of a moderately involved equestrian career. Still miss it but it’s moved into rich kids of instagram territory. [ Reply | More ]

I have experience here. My oldest went to Princeton and was a recruited athlete. He went in pre-med and I'll just have to be honest. He had very good grades in HS - but he was no competition for the ultra-competitive top minds that were his peers. He had his first C's and even D's on exams that he'd ever had, and it completely threw him. We managed to keep him on a keel and stay in school, but he was the most stressed out and depressed that we ever saw him. He ultimately chose another major path and did fine - meaning he graduated - and he's working now in a non-big finance firm ... but yes, he got chewed up and spit out. It could be different for your kid depending on their goals. Mine just happened to choose one where you run with the bulls. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I was the first in my family to go to college. I have a MS. I have a decent job. Of course I want DC to be successful but I'd be fine if they went to state schools and don't have straight A's all the time. I know they'll turn out ok and that's all that matters. I want them to be happy adults who don't live in my basement. Am I too "chill"? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think under successful people have a higher standard in that, for them, more is a stake. You were successful given your background. For a cold of wealthy people, success isn't achieved at that level [ Reply | More ]

No not at all. I'm that poster and I honestly think it stems from private school and DH expecting a certain ROI. I wish our kids had done public. I think private is biggest waste of money and extremely stress producing. [ Reply | More ]

Funny, I am from solid middle class family as is DH and we are also middle class but with more degrees. We just do not really stress or care all that much about our DCs grades, nor are we overly concerned about college. We’ve both seen too many high achieving kids burn out or not amount too much, and plenty of kids who only went to so so schools turn it in when they found a passion, and we are therefore not hyper focused on grades or school status. I agree. The most successful people I know do not come from fancy schools. And I know heaps of rich, successful people who pushed their kids so much that the kids rebel, or they're anxious and medicated. Poor kids. [ Reply | More ]
