I have been makeup free my whole adult life. Freshman year of college, I went to breakfast without makeup, and my friends said, "you're so lucky you have perfect skin and big eyes, you don't ever have to wear makeup to look good." So I stopped wearing makeup to breakfast, and then to class, and by the time I graduated, I wasn't wearing makeup at all. I curl my eyelashes and wear a little makeup on special occasions a couple of times a year. Now I'm in my late 40s and the mirror is telling me it might be time for a little more effort... [ - ] Six kids in dd's senior class have started 'non-profits' for various causes. I suspect that they get $100 to $1000 in donations. That is a small price to pay to have such an amazing smoke screen of something to write about for the college essay. I really wish I had known of this trend when dd was a freshman. What are some of the scams that you see the privileged kids in your dc's schools doing to set themselves up for stellar college admits? 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If that common then by definition the admissions committees see enough of them to discount. Getting a name brand internship is a lot more valuable, although that can be difficult to detect if they got it via connections. [ Reply | More ]

This. Admissions will look at results, not just amounts raised. Did the student come up with a new idea for fundraising or a new way to solve a problem? Or did the student just collect money from parents' friends and pass the donation on? [ Reply | More ]

op: these girls spent the summer and breaks out in the Hamptons or Nantucket, while also 'running their non profits'. Some are non profits for theatre arts (their NYC based nanny would work for the non profit doing arts and craft days in the Central Park while they were 'summering', some would 'tutor' kids in India over Skype--but actually they would do makeup tutorials for British expat girls whose parents were stationed in Pune with big Banks, and some would blog about suicide prevention and hire a 'content writer' to publish for them. np Don't discount what goes on in middle America. There is a huge number of very stellar schools outside NYC and NYS even where kids are doing the exact same college bound activities to struggle to get into a top 25 college. My dc was in FL and he and his classmates were strivers. It worked for a good number of them. Some like those kids at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas have shaped the world. [ Reply | More ]

I dunno. We live nowhere near NY and my dd’s school is a very solid UMC public but nothing crazy competitive and she was all hot to trot on “starting a non-profit” the summer after her freshman year with the idea of it looking good for college. I’m guessing it’s kind of a thing right now so certainly competitive school admissions folks have good bs detectors for when it’s the real thing and when it’s not. [ Reply | More ]

It's so fascinating how in every single generation for so long all the women had 7-15 kids, so then all the sudden after birth control it was suddenly down to 2-3 kids. Such a radical shift from the way humans lived for so many tends of thousands of years prior to very recently. It was common to have many kids because child mortality was widespread and in rural communities especially it paid to have more children. Childcare was also very different back then, there wasn't that pressure to raise the kids with standards of UC people, e.g top education + sports and extras + foreign languages + travel, nanny till they are well in their teens, etc. Kids used to work back then and older siblings as young as 7 used to babysit younger siblings. You are considered a successful parent if your kids make it to adulthood. If parents of old times were under pressure to raise their kids they way they are raised now by MC and UMC, they would probably sterilize themselves. [ Reply | More ]

I have been on Ancestry.com since 2000 and have built out my family tree to over 3,000 people. I proved that I was a Mayflower descendant and found a lot of other cool things. One interesting observation: until about 1720, when an infant died, the practice was to name the next infant of that gender the same name. Seems creepy to us now, but to them it was like the child went back up to heaven and then was sent down again as a new baby [ Reply | More ]

Okay, like her homework is really advanced for her. She can't read or add yet. So I don't talk about those things. I praise her for "reading the pictures," counting, letter and number recognition, etc. She gets a ton of homework, but I don't spend a bunch of time talking to her about it. Instead I phrase it as these are the things her teacher says we can do together, and from what she picks, I only let her work for ten minutes on it unless she's enjoying herself because there's already ten minutes for her writers journal and twenty minutes for reading. And for writers journal, I let her draw and I usually write the word of what she drew, but I do first tell her how the word goes if she wants to write. She just doesn't want to write it. So she's stressed and putting a lot of pressure on herself. She feels like she is failing. Listen to her and validate her feelings: "You're feeling really sad because Mrs. Smith told you to sit back down and it embarrassed you. I can see you are feeling upset." Then go on to let her know that making mistakes is normal and that's how we learn. But honestly, therapy would help so much. It did for my DD [ Reply | More ]

Just signed on to tell you you're not alone. My dd did this in k -- saying she wanted to die. We did (and still are) going down therapy route for a number of reasons but i think she was having some big feelings inside -- shame, anxiety about certain things, and expressing it this way. And also knowing that those words got attention (which we tried not to give). I'd try to see if she can open up to you or someone else. Even through writing or drawing. And try reading her some books on feelings. [ Reply | More ]

This. She is very young and cannot express her feeling complexity yet appropriately or talk about it, so she is saying things that get attention, extreme things. Young children often do exaggerate, like saying how they love you to death and then they hate you, using large numbers like million minutes, saying how today is the best or worst day in their lives, etc. She might just have strong emotions and not knowing how to express them. Seconding suggestion of books on feelings and also videos, lots of cartoons on that as well. Talking to her calmly is going to help too. If you see some warning signs you can always refer to a specialist. [ Reply | More ]

This was the case with my DD. She was expressing her desire to just make all of her issues disappear. She didn't want to actually die, but she lacked the communication skills and vocabulary to articulate how she was feeling. [ Reply | More ]

Therapist STAT. Also do some special things with her where you really focus on just being with her, without checking your phone. My DS is having a really hard time lately (he's older than her) and we have a special podcast we listen to together and just snuggle and hang out more than usual. I can almost see him physically relax when I give him all my focus and try to focus myself on being calm and happy around him. Maybe buy How Full is My Bucket and read it together and use that as a jumping-off point to talk about feelings. I think it's okay to say "starting school sure can be hard. I remember it being very hard for me when xyz thing happened." It's good for kids to know that hard times are real and valid and that things can change and get easier later. [ Reply | More ]

I am going to disagree with many of you and say that it's not necessarily a sign of abuse of any kind or depression. Very young kids tend to exaggerate a lot when it comes to their feelings and love using expletives and strong words. Their brains are still developing and often vocabulary or verbal communication may not catch up with the complexity of their feelings. I would observe and see what prompts your DC and in which circumstances she says such things and try to ask more questions. If she is otherwise in a good mood or if she goes and happily plays minutes after saying this, I would not worry as much, but you always can talk to a specialist if this doesn't go away and not just a short phase. She does happily play right afterwards. She says it pretty often. Like if a girl at park says the toy she's playing with is hers and she needs to take it because she's going home, my daughter would come up to me with tears in her eyes and say she wishes she was dead. [ Reply | More ]

ITA with the above poster. In K, a lot of kids say things that are inflammatory because they haven't learned how to express themselves. The fact that your DD says this when she is frustrated or unsure of how to deal with conflict and that statement will always get you involved. It is extreme but the fact that she is saying things like she would rather have your ILAWS as parents is another signal that she is looking for a reaction. I might question her more and help her reframe things. Like the park incident- "It sounds like you are feeling sad and uncomfortable since the girl took your toy. Are you not sure how to get it back? Is it something you need help with? but not react to the statement I wish I were dead in any way. I would note what and where the circumstances are that she says it and how you react. Is it to avoid something? Does she say it at bedtime or any specific time? What other behavioral changes have you noted? If it continues, it is worth talking to someone about and that info will help. My second grader did this for a bit. She was already in therapy for other stuff, but we of course talked about this too. The therapist explained it that a child will use those words to show they wish they could escape the pressure/problems/issues that they are facing. They want to just wave a wand and make it all go away. It is unlikely that your child is actually suicidal. That said, sounds like therapy could help. I wish we would have started in sooner. It made a HUGE difference for my DD. Best wishes to you and your DC. [ Reply | More ]

I fail to see why I would need a therapist. I’m done developing and like to think that my emotional development has caught up at this point. Child has done therapy, and improved in their ability to self manage their symptoms. But the child is nine and while I think it is an unreasonable expectation that the child be perfect at this, given that most adults struggle with such issues, I am not convinced that schools have different expectations. Thus my question as nobody I personally know will discuss such issues. I thought perhaps people might be more forthcoming under the blanket of anonymity. [ Reply | More ]

You sound sort of insufferable to be honest. Very few people are fully emotionally developed and your response suggests that you are not entirely self aware. If your kid is acting out and you don’t know how to handle it, therapy can help you be a better parent to that child. Also, perhaps cultivate some friendships as talking with friends openly will help you. People know if your kid has issues. Aw far as counseling out, much depends on the school [ Reply | More ]

Yes attacking people is much more indicative of self awareness and maturity. The child does not act out with me, the behavior occurs at school. So absolutely, I have not figured out how to manage my child’s behavior when not in the actual vicinity of my child. I’m open to suggestions. I’m quite frankly tired of the situation. The school is clearly relying on me for a solution. I admit I find it difficult to give them a solution to classroom behaviors that I have not witnessed personally and am hearing about second hand with vague details. Additionally, I am not an educator with training in classroom management. This is not a matter of me cultivating friendships. It is a completely taboo subject among the parents at our school. Points chart using behavior modification techniques. 9 is a little old but may work if there are items that motivate him. This was likely mentioned by your child’s therapist as a technique when he was younger. Also, Perhaps you aren’t reading between the lines of what your school is saying. Maybe they want you to send him back to therapy. Perhaps they are suggesting medication. There’s more to this story you aren’t sharing. You’re blaming the school for “vague details” but it can’t be just cursing. If you’re called in a lot and you aren’t doing anything, then yes, counseling out could be looming. Personally if I were so confused, I would speak to the teachers and school psychologist to get some concrete advice [ Reply | More ]

If you work with a therapist, they can give you solutions to your specific needs. They can make recommendations for what the school / teachers should do to help manage child's anxiety and behavior. Example: my dc was having anxiety that was manifesting itself in dc having to use the bathroom constantly. Therapist working with teacher recommend a "token" system, where dc has x tokens per day they can use to visit the bathroom. Each week, 1 less token was given, until dc was using the bathroom a normal amt of times. This is one example. [ Reply | More ]

There is no more to the story. Stop being dramatic and stop implying that I am a liar. My child has anxiety which as I understand it is quite common in highly intelligent children because they understand things that they can’t necessarily process. The child has had therapy to address the issue and has made significant progress in the ability to manage this. However, when a teacher sends such an email and is obvious that they did not take the anxiety into account you wonder if the teacher is merely annoyed by having to do extra work by following the recommendations related to the child’s condition or if this is how they start a paper trail to later “counsel” a child out. And I am not “freaking out”. I was asking a simple question. If you don’t know an answer instead of getting nasty you could choose to simply not respond. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Thoughts in HSE? What are the bad points? Seems like a small, awesome specialized. Scores are the lowest to get in. Is it really ba hidden gem or are there issues? Why doesn’t anyone want it? I never hear anyone talk about it... 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know a 12 yo who wrote a poem about suicide. School took it seriously and tried to contact his parents. They were both unreachable. School protocol dictated he be taken to ER for evaluation. Parents found him there. They are divorced. Then they had a big argument about which parent would drive him home. [ Reply | More ]

Insane on many levels. I wrote a whole series of death poems when I was that age. I have no idea why. I wasn't obsessed with death, was happy etc. so glad schools weren't as crazy back then. [ Reply | More ]
