[ - ] QUestion for all suburban moms who love it so - have 2 dc's home today...and all week on vacation...what do i do all day with them? Too cold for yard, been to library yesterday and the one museum in the area - do i drive 40 mts to the nearest children's museum - or try to wrangle up a friend to sit with them in their fabulous playroom in the basement all day long? Maybe you have a suggestion. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

let's see - let them read, color, play board games and puzzles, play with their friends, play dress-up with your old clothes, make a collage or photo album for your most recent vacation, take a trip to the ice skating or roller skating rink or arcade or bowling alley together, cook or bake together, watch a foreign film or educational show and discuss it... the possibilities are endless, it's clearly you has no imagination [ Reply | More ]

don't forget the excitement in the mundane for kids, too. go to a mall, go to the grocery store not as a chore or errand but adventure. go to the movies. write letters to gramma. go for a long walk (not too cold for that). [ Reply | More ]

OR: I don't even consider those mundane. It's not necessary to be bombarded with museums and art galleries and fancy boulangeries all the time. Writing letters to grandma may seem "boring" to the sophisticated city folk but it brings pleasure to a lot of people. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure that it is a great school for some kids/families, but it was not for us at all. we didn't like that they "didn't believe in competition" (ie don't keep score, multiple leads in school play). while we didn't like Buckley for the exact OPPOSITE reason, I think there is a middle ground to be found that will prepare kids for real life with an emphasis on fair play, sportsmanship/citizenship and how to deal with disappointment. Once kids get to Fieldston the competition kicks in and we actually really value the lack of competition at a younger age since they will be competetive for the rest of thei lives. Beyond that I would say progressive is often about hands on learning (which is very real life) and less about rote memorization or skills milestones than traditional learning. Its great for kids who can self-direct but isn't for kids who need more structure. [ Reply | More ]

DH here, and this is my personal opinion. Guys are either ready for permanent commitment, or not ready. If the latter, you are better off breaking up with a smile. When he IS ready, he will go through his list of exes and may get back in touch, or not. But the only thing that really turns the not ready into the ready, is time alone. this is TOTAL BULLSHIT. Yes it's nice that you get most of the fees waived (that saves a lot of money) but not everyone who goes through ES will ask for FA. They aren't snobs they were very nice to us when we used them few yrs back. All of the schools that I know of work with them them (we applied to 8 schools) and also hold spots for ES kids. Dalton recently (last yr or the yr before) had more than 10 ES kids for admittance. [ Reply | More ]

I'm assuming the reason you ask is that the dc is half white, so you're not sure if 50% diversity counts as far as private schools are concerned. For obvious reasons, it shouldn't count as much as 100% diversity but probably slightly edges out zero diversity. [ Reply | More ]

Early Steps is a great organization and I did not need FA and still used them and my good friend who needed FA also used them and we both got into our FC's. Now that being said, everyone does not get in using Early Steps and many people are angry that they cannot and do not guaruntee admission. About school guidance they are not snobs but they are very upfront about being realistic about which schools you can actually get into and which would be a reach. I would contact them in June and get some information and make an objective decison based on facts not hearsay. GL! [ Reply | More ]

it helps as much as anything else (connections, sibling, etc) my bi-racial child did well but she also had 97 erbs and good playdates, etc. I also know some with only waitlists. Focus on the whole child. [ Reply | More ]

DF's biracial DD/99 ERB got in everywhere they applied, all TTs. Nice girl, nice family, but even DF admitted wouldn't have happened if not biracial. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, as a Black woman, I assume whenever a white person succeeds at anything, it's because they're white. But I guess that's what they call a diversity of experience. [ Reply | More ]

NP- I have noticed that private schools like biracial kids more than 100% diverse kids. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] as a SO mom it is really hurtful reading how people refer to SOs as basically bad/stupid kids. My dc is at a "tt" preK - had great erbs but apparently didn't perform well in the playdates. we're shocked hurt and so sad & didn't think it would happen to us - pls remember it can happen to any one of us w/ our kids - things don't always work out no matter how hard you try - so remember not to gloat - thanks 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

please be hopeful. Did you call that school? Tell them of your situation and let them know you will take a spot if offered IMMEDIATELY. I hope it works out for you. We were WL everywhere (few yrs back) and gotta say I was very worried too but I got on the horn quick. GL..I really mean that. BTW the schools who sent a RJ for your dc...it's their loss. That;s how I always think about it [ Reply | More ]
