My kids go to Durham Academy and I used to attend it. I loved it. My kids love it. The teachers were great an the campuses were great places to be. It also has an affiliate called the Hill Center. It is a place where kids who have learning disabilities and ADD can get special help to do better in school. The place has also won many awards. I recommend it. More info at www.da.org. [ - ] BF moms: I have an 11-day old...am ebfing and, on the advice of a baby nurse, pumping as much as 4x/day. I don't pump for very long...maybe 5-10 minutes & produce about 4-6oz in that time. My boobs feel constantly engorged. The b.nurse makes me feel my milk isn't enough and is "topping off" my feedings with a bottle (my baby is relatively small, 5lbs/13oz, so b.nurse says she wants to fatten her up.). My question: am I f*king up my supply but pumping so often, so early? (I started pumping day 5). So far, there doesn't seem to be a problem w/ nipple confusion, but maybe she's not getting enough milk bc I'm pumping. I hate the bn & am letting her go. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Cool, thanks so much. I'm going to bag the pumping for now. The baby doesn't seem totally content after feeding...she might wake up an hour later, or sometimes 2-3 hours later. She's pretty fussy on the breast, but them locks in. My nipples hurt like hell. I know that's supposed to mean the latch isn't right, but some pain seems normal, no? She'll be two weeks old 2moro. You may want to talk to a lactation consultant. The engorgement can be caused by too much pumping for example. I would not necessarily believe your baby nurse. Your milk supply most certainly is enough (you are engorged!). I also had problems with bf in the beginning, the lactation consultant helped me tremendously! [ Reply | More ]

If you are in Manhattan most of the hospitals have a mothers breastfeeding group that is drop -in, where you can see a lactation consultant for advice. Roosevelt on 59th had a Monday morning group. You will get great advice and help [ Reply | More ]

I would try to bf every 2.5-3 hours during the day, and pump at night before bed and first thing in the morning. Nurse can give milk from those pumping sessions during the night. Don't pump during the day if you are also bf-ing, because there's probably not enough milk left in the breast for db to drink if you've already pumped it out. -signed, mom of two who did this with both. no I did the same thing, it will balance out. I felt very engorged too but it gets better. Never had a problem with nipple confusion, keep doing what you are doing [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Did you use a special nipple (other than a 1 or whatever). I read that super soft nipples can lessen assuage any "confusion". [ Reply | More ]

I think you need to talk to a lactation consultant about supporting breast feeding. This over-pumping will keep you engorged and doesn't sound necessary to me. Is your ped concerned about the baby's weight? Is she gaining? [ Reply | More ]

she is gaining. she gained 5 oz in 3 days, but that was with the baby nurse bottle feeding (my milk) after almost every feeding. I think I need to talk to a lactation consultant too, thanks. I am trying not to pump...I didn't yesterday & have not yet today. I'm totally engorged still but figure by not pumping, it might even itself out. [ Reply | More ]

why why why get breastfeeding advice from a baby "nurse"?? Why why why? Immediately cease and desist, woman! You do NOT need to be pumping 4x a day, OR topping off your baby. [ Reply | More ]

Dude, you're right. How 'about she made a sour face & said my milk production was going way down (because I'm not pumping) and then said it's good if I want to wean...knowing full well my intention is to bf for at least six months. [ Reply | More ]

stop pumping and see a lactation consultant. I don't necessarily believe in nipple confusion, but it seems unnecessary to be giving baby so many bottles if you are there to do the bfing. your baby nurse seems to have her own agenda. [ Reply | More ]

Please note, I brought my child today to Chelsea Market for trick-or-treating (a bit after 2 p.m.). It was the biggest disappointment ever. I would hardly describe it as a Halloween destination. Save your time and energy! Most of the stores do not welcome trick-or-treaters; and those that do are really stingy. Also, it was difficult trying to explain to my 2 1/2 year old why some of the store clerks gave him candy and others were looking at him like he had 4 heads. In my opinion either all the stores should agree to have trick-or-treating or none at all. It's too much of a hassle trying to figure out which ones are in the spirit and which are unwelcoming. It's rather unfortunate as we really patronize Chelsea Market all year long! [ Reply | More ]
