Look at the websites of both the candidates and compare. FWIW if you're just over 250 you're unlikely to be impacted negatively with Obama's stated plan - after deductions etc your gross will put you in the 'middle class' category. But please also remember the famous words of the republicans from previous years - "Read my lips - no new taxes" - followed by taxes. At least Obama is being honest that some kind of new tax will be necessary. We are in such a frightening economic condition now that we will not be able to continue to function (let alone as a superpower) without some investment in ourselves. McCain will need to tax - even if he doesn't call it that - if (god help us) he gets in. He's just not honest enough to tell voters that before they vote! [ Reply | More ]

The biggest complaint about Bush is that he spends like a liberal and I agree with that. I don't think of Bush as a conservative with all the spending he does. So how will Obama be different? If the economy is strong there is lower unemployment and more profits, resulting in higher tax revenue. So with the world the way it is today, you would feel secure with a small military. Have you been watching Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Venezuela etc etc etc? Healthcare would cripple the us. Did you know that California has more MRI machines than all of Canada? Did you know that Canada has not developed a successful drug to treat a major illness? Did you know that the average wait for an operation on a patient with a brain tumor is 3 months? There has got to be a better way [ Reply | More ]

Nope, the military size is just fine, as long as we don't start any other wars, which I believe Obama is much less likely to do than McCain. And as far as healthcare goes, Obama is not for socialized system. All he wants is to offer affordable coverage to the 43M people who have none currently. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 09.22.08, 08:04 AM Flag

But he won't offer coverage to just those 43 million people. He will be on the hook for 300 million people. That's how these government programs balloon. Welfare was meant to be a temporary safety net but ballooned into a multigenerational debacle that cripple millions of families. Look at social security. We have no way of paying for it and no guarantees that if our children pay into it, that they will receive anything when they retire. [ Reply | More ]

They insist on a new set of rules and then break their own rules--or change them again! For the first few years they were churning the curriculum and administrative structure. Now, having driven the teachers crazy and the administrators into retirement, they (I say they, but it's really Joel - it all comes from him) are torturing the parents. If you change the system every year people lose faith in the system. People realize that the rules are arbitrary. People feel insecure. And unfortunately, instead of attacking the DOE, people start attacking each other. It's a little like Lord of the Flies. People behave badly when there is no legitimate authority. 49 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

repost: this is exactly what has become intolerable. everyone is suspicious and parents are pitted against each other. I do not think it is justified, and if anything, I think the doe should come out strongly with a statement that they will not respond to the crazies. no other govt agency releases info about individual citizens, and all this asking questions about kids at various overcrowded gen eds or G&Ts should not be tolerated. DOE needs to make a strong statement about how far they will go in the quest for accountability and transparency. people have taken this concept way too literally. they are not owed this level of openess to te point of violating thhe privacy of others. paranoid people always believe they have really been screwed, or that their suspicions are real. but they haven't. the doe does not owe them an explanation for every decision, and the biggest error on DOE's part is that they make it sound like they should answer these questions, and now people feel entitled to it, when in fact, they are not. well, we disagree. they also have a duty to protect the privacy of individual citizens, and if I were one of the parents with a kid given a spot at nest this week, I would sue the hell out of them if any info were released publicly about how my dc got there. you people are crazy, and have no need for info about every single decision. you have been allowed to become entitled, and the doe needs to tell you to back off. their lax stance towards people like you has allowed for increased paranoia and insanity, and they should shut people like you down pronto. I'm not OP and I do agreed that the DoE may not release personal info of any families to any civilian. I also believe that there has been ample abuse facilitated by the DoE's accustomed lack of accountability. I fall fairly square in the middle of your and OP's opinions, it seems. I know of many cases where families have bulldozed, threatened or ingratiated their kids into seats that could have been more fairly filled. I also know people who are very cut up and frustrated by what they take as personally unfair results in dealings w/the DoE. I remain strongly convinced that there is absolutely a platform for some degree of oversight and accountability in any organization which is meant to fairly, serve the needs of as many children as possible. The DoE has a long way to go; If they didn't, there would be less people defending them and screaming at other folks to quit 'rousing rabble'. [ Reply | More ]

possible. It may be improving, yet favors are still exchanged and policy is sometimes capriciously overridden. It's not the mistakes, which are always going to happen, that rankle my ire. It's the way the lack of accountability is defended by people whom either choose to ignore the failings, are caught up in looking out for themselves, have set upon each other and take the focus off the issues that must continue to be addressed. Having said all that, I'd like to add: Get over it w/the Citywides for this year; it's near the end of September! There are seats and kids that qualify for and need them. As for the poster above, stating the DoE doesn't need to explain anything; itd and think thou doth protest a bit much- to neither work in the DoE or have some other bone you'd like to keep buried... Relatives, friends and acquaintances over the course of at least 20 years have chosen to share this information. This year is probably the first one in which these instances seem to have diminished in volume. Our family was offered a seat for our child in a school we didn't rank(which we declined)when I knew other families not given such an offer; they would have accepted. Does this count as working around the stated procedure? To the other poster, I'd like to clarify that I don't know whether you're a witch or not; I simply said that your call to "shut down" those questioning persons "pronto" is pretty vehement. How does it hurt you when others seek accountability they believe is their due? I'm the poster that said I am absolutely against any info, disclosures or any case by case hashing out of any individual children and families, except by a formally appointed factor, for review. I certainly wouldn't share details I may have of anyone, or their possibly 'unorthodox' placements but they happen. I'm not paranoid or a huge conspiracy theorist; I'm a long-lived nyer and know everyone will never be satisfied, while believing the PS system is a big mess, sprinkled w/some wonderful schools that make it work. you cannot have it both ways. if kids are being added to classes or someone knows of someone living out of zone, you cannot call up the doe and ask specifically how those kids got there without violating the rights of these people in some way. doe needs to make policies and by and large stick to them unless a need arises to right an error or some other issue. they cannot be talking on the phone about every kid to every citizen with a beef. just makes no sense and is not necessary [ Reply | More ]

Oh and by the way, I'm the OP on this and I didn't post whatever other posts you think I did. I totally don't care how the kids got into 199 and I don't much care how the kids got into NEST or Anderson. I was making a much larger point, which is people question administrators relentlessly about small things, when they don't trust them. Parents don't trust the DOE because they keep changing the system, which calls the legitimacy and fairness and reasonableness of the system into question. They're rigid with parents but then break their own rules. And they screw up a lot. So this creates mistrust. Mistrust breeds paranoia and excessive questioning. It was not like this ten years ago when I entered the system. [ Reply | More ]

well, then we agree. I think the upset over the changes and placements, coupled with this idea that people are owed an answer for every spot are causing people to turn against each other and it is very bad. doe needs to make it clear what is within the realm of public information, and what is not. ITA. But I think this atmosphere is partly a result (not entirely, but partly) of the lack of clear communication from the DOE about how they are handling it. That is exactly what happens when an institution fails to communicate clearly or show accountability to the populations it serves: the rumor mill takes over and substitutes for the lack of direct, clear communication. no, the doe has it right. rezoning is necessary and the better approach to the overcrowding problem. it is larger than some cheating families, and needs to be addressed on a macro level. true of all these issues, which is why it is not helpful to be discussing how many kids are in each G&T class or how many kids on the class list are from out of zone, on UB. First, the DOE said more than two years ago that it was changing the admissions policy over the course of the next few years. That their end goal was to test every pre-K kid in the system. To make it more inclusive because they wanted to address the perception (statistics backed this up) that G&T was an UMC/MC entitlement at every one's expense. They've been pretty up front with their information for a government agency BUT since it is so close to the UB crowd it seems like they are working in the shadows. Talk to a builder about the Buildings Dept, or a restaurant owner about Dept of Health THEN tell me DOE is torturing anyone. [ Reply | More ]

The DOE has changed the admissions systems every year for the past three years. Normal humans study a situation, the make changes. The DOE makes changes. Then makes new changes. Then makes new changes. There is constant turmoil. They did this with the curriculum (not GT, system-wide). They did it with the administrative structures. Now they're doing it with D3 admissiosn and GT admissions. Every year, they make new changes. Last year they insisted in the face of numerous complaints and reasonable argumetns that it was useful to have untrained, inconsistently educated preschool teachers with no knowledge or background of gifted education, make gifted evaluations. This year, they changed it. So once you see that even they don't believe their own bs, you start doubting and questioning them on everything. No doubt if you looked closely at other governmetn entities, you'd find plenty to question. Your argument seems to be: Since lots of govt agencies screw up, let's not question any of them. Good thnking, Sherlock. [ Reply | More ]

They looked at the system. They said we think it needs to change and here is how we want to change it. Round one we are introducing two new tests. We're gonna see how they work, etc. Get everyone up to speed and then round two we are going to centralize, take away interviews, etc. Round three we test everyone, etc. After round one they found that the GRS was not a great tool so they reevaluated and improved. At round two they made other changes and improvements. Some of these were due to political pressures, some due to the reality of the world they work in. Find me a city agency HELL find me any public agency that is more responsive. We might not like every decision but I think the DoE is trying and doing a good job in a really hard environment. 1. They picked an assessment - GRS - that everyone told them was no good and which was OBVIOUSLY an idiotic measure that wouldn't work. After a year of using it, they said, well, that didn't work, let's try a new test. How does that square with the hardworking step at a time DOE that exists in your imagination? They also were told that there system would run too late. They ignored that also. Round Two. Their system ran even later. The tool to replace GRS was a test designed to identify verbal learning disabilities. Brilliant way to id gifted kids. I could go on. Nikki Rosen, one of the most imcompetent employees in teh entire system, changed criteria for Anderson admissions at the last minute, unbeknownst to anyone - AND the DOE backed her up instead of firing her. Either you are way underinformed or you just have a kneejerk acceptance of authority. I"d like to know how the posters who think the DOE is doing a good job, feel about the Federal bailout. I'm guessing they think Federal officlals are doing their conscientious best. [ Reply | More ]
