[ - ] It doesn't bother anyone that Obama refused to hold his hand up during the pledge of allegiance and wear the flag pin on his lapel??? To me, that should clearly raise an eyebrow for all you Obama lovers... 32 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I am a born and raised American, incredibly proud of the country, and I've never worn a flag on my lapel, nor do I generally raise my hand during the pledge of allegiance. I don't believe in having to make outward shows to people to prove what's in my heart. But, then again, I'm not running for president. [ Reply | More ]

Just FYI about Mr. Patriotism himself from Sydney Schanberg "John McCain, who has risen to political prominence on his image as a Vietnam POW war hero, has, inexplicably, worked very hard to hide from the public stunning information about American prisoners in Vietnam who, unlike him, didn't return home. Throughout his Senate career, McCain has quietly sponsored and pushed into federal law a set of prohibitions that keep the most revealing information about these men buried as classified documents. Thus the war hero people would logically imagine to be a determined crusader for the interests of POWs and their families became instead the strange champion of hiding the evidence and closing the books." The only people with direct experience I have ever heard question John McCain's allegiance to his fellow POWs were the reactionary guys who were pissed when he helped normalize relations with VN. There are a lot of things to hate John McCain for. This is a non-starter. [ Reply | More ]

Actually it isn't. His voting record speaks for itself, he has done nothing to help veterans from any wars or military service at all. unlike other veterans in the Senate, like John Kerry for example. [ Reply | More ]

It has everything to do with how John McCain views government's responsibilities to veterans. I guess he thinks they should all marry a heiress instead of relying on any help from government. And btw, his reversal on torture did not help the POW cause either. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a Democrat. An "external locus of control" here loosely talks about the fact that some people do things for the outward power that controls their lives/for the outward impression. So, in my example -- one might put their hand over their heart or wear a pin or fly a flag outside their home... whatever... because they believe that patriotism is about looking patriotic NOT ABOUT ACTING PATRIOTICALLY. Bush does all this: wearing flag pin, holding up his hand.., but is he a good American president? He in an incurable fool detached from reality, he lied and cheated us into this mess in Iraq, where thousands of American solders have died. He "refused" to hold up his hand during the pledge? When/where was this? What was the reason? I would like to hear more from a reputable news source, can you provide a link? Re: flag on label. Are you kidding? BTW my dh was an "army brat" and we put the flag out during holidays (and it is very important to follow a certain ritual) and I think he and his father think some of this "we are so american b/c we put a stupid pin on our shirts" is crazy. Neither my dh or FIL feel the need to "prove" their patriotism. I don't wear a flag pin either, nor does dh or his FIL and I don't question theirs. It was the national anthem -- not the pledge of allegiance. I've seen the photo, and basically, he's standing in front of several people, who could all see each other and all eventually put their hands on hearts during the nationale anthem. He stood with hands clasped in front of him. I've never heard of the requirement to put your hand on your heart during the national anthem, and I'm as patriotic as they come. [ Reply | More ]
