We didn't get in, applied for pre-k 3's. everyone there is really nice, but there were about 200 families on the tours (wild estimate) and heard only a few slots for non-legacy/sibs. Got WL. Nice people, though! They send a really nice WL letter that sounds like they know your DC but everyone gets the same letter I think. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Just curious, where did your DC end up? Would you apply again? The Packer kids that I know are the best adjusted and nicest of the local private school kids. We might consider applying for middle school. [ Reply | More ]

I'd wait to see if he goes back down. If he doesn't, enter the room without turning on lights or looking at him. If he is still crying, pick him up without looking or say even a single word. Do not rock or engage in any way. Just be as boring as possible. Then put him back and walk out. Soon he will realize that it's not that fun to have mom come in. [ Reply | More ]

You may actually have to do that all day for a little while. The beauty of time out is that if it is done consistently, the children will come to dread the boredom of it and you can then stop bad behavour with just the threat of it. [ Reply | More ]

I know it seems daunting and with my daughter, it took 65 times (not even kidding) before she gave up and realized that I was not giving in. That's the key, they need to know that you are dead serious about what you threaten or it will not work. You may have to wait until your partner is home to help but the key is to be the leader of the house instead of them. You will be exhausted but once they really understand that you mean what you say, it will get better [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 09.21.08, 07:17 PM Flag

You have to use a very stern voice and face. Don't give up. They will escalate the joking around because they know at some point mom will give up so they have to outlast you, until they realize that "hey, I'm getting tired and mom isn't giving up. It's truly hard and you should have help but it works if done right. The next time will then be easier [ Reply | More ]

op: yes...it seems so sudden. I feel like I can't leave the room without a fight starting. Do you have suggestions that seem to work? All I do is threaten no tv or to take a toy away and it isn't working. Plus I feel so mean all the time. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 09.21.08, 07:02 PM Flag

i'm struggling with a good one too. they dont watch tv so that doesnt help. taking a toy away has minimal impact. but the bigger issue is when they stir each other up--one encourages the other to spill his drink, to squirt the soap on the floor, etc. they find it hillarious and really get each other going [ Reply | More ]

This sounds so mean but it worked for me. I would plan a fake trip to somewhere that they LOVED- with the warning that they had to behave or they wouldn't go-knowing full well that they would start fighting and blow it. They were distraught not to be able to go. I used that as an example in the future and they knew I meant business and they really shaped up [ Reply | More ]

remember, kids are subconsciously crying out for boundaries. It calms them to know that if they do "A", then "B" will be the consequences. Your children will not hate you and you may even realize that they are more affectionate. You are not beating them or burning them with cigarettes. You are being a parent. [ Reply | More ]

Praise works when they are being good at the time you praise them. If they are killing each other and you are standing there praising them, they will think you are a fool. I started telling my 2 kids that they are "best friends." I must tell them 10 times a day that they are the best friends in the world and they will always be friends. IF it looks like they might start fighting, I remind them that they are best friends. It's like a mantra almost. It works best to say it when they are calm so that you can remind them when they start to fight [ Reply | More ]

I do the best friends thing also. When they start fighting I tell them that they cannot talk or play with each other for the rest of the day. They sort of panic and run to hug each other and beg me to let them play, so I do under the condition that they don't fight. Mine are 6yo though [ Reply | More ]
