[ - ] Has anyone's boy done well on the Olsat and/or SB but less so on the ERb. it seems like most of the posts are the other way around - strong erb followed by disappointing olsat at least. relatedly, how similar are the ERB and the SB. I know the Olsat is a different kettle of fish, but are there parts of the ERB and SB that do/n't overlap? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] I feel like i really screwed up. DD is a "gifted" kid with 99's across the board on all 3 tests from last year. In pre-K now (December birthday if you're wondering why the testing last year) and doing 2nd and 3rd grade math. Has all the pre reading skills but not trying to read at all. Wants to be able to read and complains that she can't but won't try to do it. This morning I mentioned something about 5 year old girls knowing how to read and DD burst into tears. I felt like Mommy Dearest. I know she'll read when she's ready and it's fine to be 5 and not be able to read. Why did I open my big, stupid mouth? 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My kids did not read until the 3rd grade. I kid you not. He loved to be read to and then would repeat the story almost word for word to his older brother. It was cutest thing. I was very, very concerned that he kept going from grade to grade and could not read. P.S. 87 was the school btw. The teachers kept saying he was very bright and it would come. I'm like yeah, right. But sure enough, it was like literally one random day he was reading. Without my help or his stepfather's help. Just reading like he had been doing it all along. [ Reply | More ]

Me again. You said a bone-headed thing. You feel like pond-scum, but your kid will forget about it until you say the next bone-headed thing. Keep reading to her and being encouraging and have her evaluated (I don't think it's needed) but it could make you feel better that she is quite bright. BTW my P.S. 87 then Earth School kid who could not read until the 3rd grade is now 18 and at Cornell if that makes you feel better. [ Reply | More ]

I recall reading an old post from a mother basically saying that her 70+ scoring kid got into a private despite all of the naysayers (my word, her word not so kind) who said her child would wind up in public school. So, take everything you read here with a grain of salt (which, I guess would include this post as well!!) and apply to schools that do not require an ERB as well as to others that you think would be a good fit for your child. Best of luck to you. [ Reply | More ]
