I just looked at all the IB schools in Manhattan and Brooklyn and I have to say that they are not terribly impressive. The only IB school in Brooklyn is Brooklyn Friends. The program there is very new and not fully developed yet. I would not limit yourself to IB schools in NYC, unless you are planning to move abroad at some point and want the continuity. I'm fine with dh looking at home or away. Never bothered me, which is why he doesn't do it as much as he use to. I find this true with clubs, too...my friends who say they do not want their husbands there tend to find out their husbands went. I tell my husband to go and have fun, but he never goes...he'd rather be home. I think it is something about it being forbidden that makes it more appealing. [ Reply | More ]

No, porn is demeaning to men and women and often leads to other problems. Studies have shown porn to be like a drug, you start off with something mild (Playboy) and move on to more explicit and then eventually deviant. And, of course, it's just a short leap from porn to a lap dance to consorting with prostitutes. Just ask Elliot Spitzer. [ Reply | More ]

NP: What does that have to do with the fact that there is clearly a need for more private schools? Two brand new schools were completely oversubscribed in their infancy. In the case of Mandell, people took spots without even being able to see a physical space. There is clearly a demand for private school spots. This has nothing to do with who is and is not smart. Not everything has to be about that. It is simple supply and demand. [ Reply | More ]

So if I understand your point correctly, there should be no additional private school spots created, ever? If that is your point, do you share that view on everything? For example, if someone wants a 4 bedroom apartment and can afford one, should there never ever be another 4 bedroom apartment built? If people can afford something and there is a demand for it, then supply is generally created. That's the way the world works and private education is really no different. [ Reply | More ]

If a developer feels like building more 4 bedroom apartments, fine. But there should not be a govt decree saying that YOU have to have a four bedroom apartment. THAT is the way the world works. Supply and demand means 'if it is needed then someone will create it' it does not mean Mrs Jones doesn't like public for little Janie so therefore someone should build a school that is private that will take Janie [ Reply | More ]

No you are saying the more private schools must be built. That is not true. Facts, figures, whatever -- of course the publics are completely overcrowded, that's been the case for a long time, and of course we need lots of public schools built to lessen this problem, but that doesn't mean that more private schools aren't also needed. Some parents who have kids in a public school might prefer private -- take the kid out of the public, making more room for another child in the public. So, make more privates and more publics. We need both. [ Reply | More ]

Did the families you know apply broadly (e.g., to 8+ schools, incl. some lower tiers)? [ Reply | More ]

How is it that you're privy to erb scores? Seriously, people lie about their kids' scores. There aren't nearly as many high 90s as you'd think based on what you read here and what you hear from other moms at preschool drop-off. [ Reply | More ]

Look, you can call people trolls all you want, but the fact is that stand-out kids get into schools near the top of their list. Maybe that upsets you, but it's true. [ Reply | More ]

sometimes an amazing, smart kid won't "standout" at an interview. dd is rather shy with strangers, and might not impress schools as well as another kid who is outgoing. [ Reply | More ]

That was my DD. 99/97/98 ERB and does not open her mouth in a group. She does well in one-on-one interviews, but that's not the format at the vast majority of schools. [ Reply | More ]

fund raising is huge. If you can get an interesting grant so that your school is the only school that offers film making, or a visit from famous people, and you can get in the press, that is great. Reach out to other parents in the school or who are considering their options now. Maybe focus on improving the pre k now and you can build up to the 5th grade as you go along. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, money as usual is key. if there are any parents that have grantwritng experience or can otherwise help raise money, they can make an enormous difference. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, this is easier to do if you live in a neighborhood that has a fairly affluent (at least middle class) population, but nearly everyone is avoiding the local zoned school. That is because the DOE has demonstrated some desire to improve those schools so families will start using them. So, a dedicated group of parents does need the DOE's cooperation, because it often starts with appointing a dynamic new principal who gets lots of DOE support/funding to attract those kinds of parents. But if the DOE sees a large number of parents organized to pick up on this, it's easier to achieve. [ Reply | More ]

i don't know. sad to say, but the best schools are often ones where nearly 100% of the pop is affluent. 234, 41, etc. not always, but it makes sense. in schools that serve the projects, fundraising will always be an issue even if there are some wealthy parents making somewhat of a difference. That's somewhat true, as it is far easier to fundraise if 100% of population is affluent. But the key is that a school can serve the projects if there is also a significant critical mass, close to 50%, of more affluent kids. Not rich, just more middle class than kids coming from projects. A school like that may not be like a school that only serves upper middle class kids, but it can certainly be a very good neighborhood school. I think PS 261 in Brooklyn may be something like that, although don't know for sure, but very popular school with a population that is not all affluent. [ Reply | More ]

i think that's great and more power to them. otoh, we had a choice between a gen ed and a g&t this year. the gen ed raises four times as much money as the school that houses the gen ed, and i have to admit that played a part in our decision. [ Reply | More ]

I think it depends what your definition of massive problems is. No public school is perfect, even those in affluent suburbs (believe me, my sister's kids go to a school in a very rich suburb of LA and parents still have complaints, but it's an excellent school). But I think the fact that PS 8 is suffering from overcrowded issues speaks for itself -- too many parents now want to send their kids there. [ Reply | More ]
