[ - ] I don't know what to tell my friend. She's been a SAHM for 6 years. She is very burnt out on in. She doesn't even seem to take joy in her DCs. Also, her DH is kind of a jerk, telling her she should feel fortunate she could stay home and that she should see a psychiatrist. Maybe she IS depressed? I wish I could give her advice... 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't get that. Plenty of moms work (I do, for example). The kids are not harmed by it. And if it'll restore her sense of self, who cares what the DH wants? [ Reply | More ]

Are there money issues? Because maybe if she had some help around the house, either with the children or better yet, with the house itself, she'd feel a little less burnt out. Tending to children is tireing, but doing that plus keeping a house clean can be depressing. Could she maybe put some of the children in a day care a couple mornings a week so that she can get a break, go get her nails done or go see a movie....??? [ Reply | More ]

He Dh is pretty "frugal" - saves everything for retirement, is resentful when she spends any kind of money, so I doubt he'd go for any outside help. She does do everything, he doesn't even mow the lawn. Her DCs are almost in school full-time, one more year and they both will be. [ Reply | More ]

tell her that you noticed that she's down and if there's anything you can do for her. try brainstorming some new ideas with her on a course of action to take, whether it be joining a volunteer group, getting a part-time job, finding a new hobby, getting help, etc [ Reply | More ]

I think she would like a part-time job. She was going to school to be a teacher, but she has to do student teaching first (unpaid) and the DH certainly won't spring for childcare while she is doing that. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Weird. So we bought a place with another couple as a TIC and we are waiting for it to be condo-ized. when we did the rennovations we kept saying we were going to get a washer/dryer in our place and we just never did- neither did they. so we both use the one in the basement. anyway, i saw her this morning and she was wearing one of my hoodies (zip up sweatshirts). I know it was mine- but i looked anyway and mine is no where, i must have left it in the dryer. How do i say something? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I live in Forest Hills Gardens in a 2 family townhouse. We LOVE it. It feels like you are living in a beautiful, lush green suburb. But in reality you are a 20 minute subway ride from midtown...or a $30 cab ride. Schools are great (elementary). Junior high is more questionable. Lots of families in the area. Austin street, the main shopping street, has anything you need within walking distance...fish store, gourmet/natural store, cheese shop, a few chain cloting stores, nysc, childrens dance studio, children's cooking school, music school, gymboree, etc etc. Museums are in the city for the most part, but there are some others that are w/in driving distance such as the science museum in flushing meadows park that is about a 7 minute drive.
