[ - ] my dd, 7, asked me what would happen if you had a baby and weren't married. the question was out of left field. i asked her why she asked me that, but she said she was just wondering. we do know someone who is recently married and pregnant, so perhaps that precipitated the question. what would you have said in response? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

OK. Just checking. I've told my six year old that it's my opinion that that arrangement is ideal, but that other might make different choices--like my sister (who has recently tossed her abusive boyfriend of 6 years out and is now dealing with the legal mess involved with having a child by him--my dd wanted to know if her aunt would get "remarried", hence our conversation). sorry got pulled away. I find that in questions like this, sometimes the most simple answer is best. I give that and then wait for follow up from ds. They'll then say "but what about..." or nothing. And I can answer what they want to know without getting into a huge thing if unnecessary. (This is not to suggest that we don't talk about real stuff. I just try and do that in a more structured/less reactionary way. Granted my "best laid schemes...") [ Reply | More ]

honestly, I think it has more to do with the kid than with the school. just the other day, dd said to me that she was a freak because she was the only kid she knew who wasn't having sex or doing drugs. She was sort of joking, she doesn't really think she's a freak, but she also doesn't understand why the other kids do those things. I never gave her an age limit, but I did tell her to wait as long as she can (with the sex) because once she starts, she not going to want to stop and it just makes life way more complicated. I told her she's only a kid for a very short time of her life, so don't be in a hurry to grow up [ Reply | More ]

I have a teen and it can be tricky for a couple of reasons. One is that a lot of times the kids aren't actually "dating." They get together in groups. The other is that, at least at dd's high school, kids come from all 5 boroughs, which makes it harder to foster a relationship with parents, especially if they don't think it's important. I've found that moms of dds are way more vigilant about this sort of thing. A lot of parents of boys just don't care that much [ Reply | More ]

yes - and not just during the holidays - we both tend to over-do it at time - but he gets much more f'd up...he has not gone to any holiday parties because a couple of weeks ago he was really really drunk and puked in a cab - i was livid - that has set him straight for a while. so maddening that they can't just go out, have some drinks, get a buzz on and come home without it ending up just a sad scene. I'm friends with this guy at work who sleeps around behind his Dw's back. For as long as I've known him he rents a hotel room the night of his company christmas party. Tells his DW he doesn't want to drive home when drunk. Bottom line,he parties with his colleagues and then spends the night with his mistress of choice that night. At least yours is coming home. This would bug me more if I were a SAHM and never got out for a girls' night. Now that we are both working and I make an effort to get out, the tables do get turned. Today I was hungover and DH had to deal with DC in the morning - which is our usual routine, but he did pick-up from daycare for me the last two nights because I was out. I do totally understand how you feel however, I am not trying to tell you it's your fault or that you need to get out more. But maybe you do, KWIM? To the gym or spa if partying is not your thing and you can afford it. [ Reply | More ]

That's exactly what my 92-y-o grandmother would do! My grandfather once found a wallet and got in touch with the owner -- the guy came to pick it up and clearly did not have a lot of $, but offered my grandfather the cash inside the wallet as a reward -- and he took it (even though he had more than enough!!).
