np: i think unless you have specific concerns or are high risk, these days HPT are considered accurate so no need for OB to confirm pg. Most OBs seems to want to see you around 7-8 weeks - in time to discuss with you things like nuchal test and CVS which are done around 11-12 weeks. [ Reply | More ]

well, you already know I'm sure no alcohol, smoking, and then you are supposed to avoid imported soft cheese, cold cuts, no fish that has a lot of mercury but fish with low amounts of mercury and high amounts of fatty acids are good for the baby (like salmon and shrimp). Supposedly you are supposed to avoid sushi but the seaweed wrap part is actually really good for you so you could have the vegetarian kind. Drink a lot of water and good luck trying all the stupid stuff that never seems to work to make the m/s go away. Oh yeah, and no caffiene, increases miscarriage risk :-( [ Reply | More ]

in general, you should avoid anything raw. also, they say you should avoid deli meats too. but if you avoid everything "they" say, you'll end up with very limited food choices. my doc was very laid back about the whole thing - your body is your baby's universe. so take care of it - but try not to change anything drastically (i.e. dont suddenly start/stop exercising). you can have caffeine, but in limited quantities but why do it unless you NEED it. no soft cheeses. my doc was totally OK with an occassional glass of wine and he said i could eat sushi too. i ate sushi very rarely and ONLY from a reputable restaurant to minimize risk of listeria. i dotn think picking up heavy things will do much to your fetus - it is very well protected. usually if something happens and you have a miscarriage in the early weeks (god forbid!) its due to a chromosomal abnormality, not bc of physical acts. To the poster who said Why should I feel empathy... Generally speaking having empathy is considered a good thing. People can have empathy with others whose circumstances differ from theirs. You can have empathy with someone who made a mistake you didn't make. Getting something right, isn't an invitation to feel superior to others who, for whatever reason, didn't get it right. If you want to turn motherhood into a "pissing contest" I guarantee you that I can find a bunch of things that I thought of doing that you didn't, and I can then feel superior to you. Shall we do that? [ Reply | More ]

in theory, yes. but unfortunately, everything else aside, levels of parental involvement - both in school and in students lives - make a huge difference in the quality of education. the students in a school where most of the parents care (or have the time to care) about homework, behavior, discipline, etc. are going to end up with a better education. And the sad fact is, that for the most part, parents who are better educated and are in a higher socio-economic class are in a better position to be more involved. [ Reply | More ]

I have a 14 yo and 12 is the worst age... I would not worry too much about what they say to each other - because it's almost always of a teasing nature - esp. when they are around their peers. The reality is kids at this age are dealing with a lot and peer pressure will make them always go along with the 'pack' and the 'cooler kids'. You just have to shore up your kid at home to better deal with this and know who his friends are... the worst thing to do is to have him show he's upset to them - he should just seem to laugh it off. I would not get involved unless it gets too far, or he asks you too - it could backfire on him. I know its harsh - but just the reality of teens. gl [ Reply | More ]

No, I have a 14 yr old too and this is NOT normal behavior - it is far across the line and the fact that they posted it on the internet means they have no conception of how wrong it is. You should NOT accept this as "boys being boys". Your son will be seriously abused the rest of the school year if you let these kids get away with it. You have to SHOW all of the parents this video and have them confront their sons. No parent I know of would be anything but horrified if they saw their own child behaving this way. [ Reply | More ]

No, it does matter. Ffld county is huge, easily more than an hours drive end to end. Plus all the public school systems are very, very good so there is little need. Most private schools, though not all, are religious. [ Reply | More ]

Caveat Emptor: Lots of suburban private schools are for kids who "fell in with the wrong crowd" in public schools but come from families with enough $$ to pay for private. Esp. true where public schools are excellent, such as Fairfield [ Reply | More ]

np: i don't think this is true at all. in spite of excellent public schools in almost every town, there will always be kids who do better in smaller classes, with more individual attention, etc. also some of these schools are single sex which is not something offered at public schools, but definitely desired by some families. i have friends who went private in fairfield county bc they just missed the public bday cut off and the private school was more flexible. I think this way of thinking is a bit ridiculous. Kids need to learn to deal with various personalities througout their life. We don't always get what we want so being placed with someone you may not like is just tough shit. I was with the same class for 9 yrs (k-8) and there were some ppl I didn't gel with but I didn't let that or them take away from my school experience [ Reply | More ]
