[ - ] D15 fifth-grade mom here—stupid to put ICE as first choice when they only accept 70 kids and are choosing from citywide applicant pool? I think it’s the best option but so do probably thousands of others. Also it’s very far away from where we live. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would do it, if they release the score this year. My DD took it a couple years ago and got a 138, no prep. We decided to do it because if she got a super high score of say 150 we might view her educational needs as different than say a 120. NYC is such a competitive place and I always feel that I'm doing a horrible job at parenting, it was a nice reminder that hey... maybe our kid will be allright after all! We prepped both our kids for G&T, not Hunter, and in my experience, it was just a productive, engaging thing to do regardless of the test. Both kids loved doing their "math work" and I think it made them stronger, more focused thinkers. It's not that different from doing BrainQuest or a bunch of puzzles, to be honest. I would recommend the class we took to people who aren't taking the test just for the enrichment. [ Reply | More ]

My kid tested very high. Was not reading, but was very verbal and emotionally mature. He preferred to spend time with older kids. He was very into the concepts of right and wrong. Other things that can be indicative (or mean nothing) include intense interests in subjects, drawing with lots of details, elaborate "story," telling (not fibs, just detailed conversations). I actually did not expect him to test well, but we lived in a crappy zone, so I was pursuing all alternatives. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Genuinely interested in a discussion here. We are holding Kavanaugh to a standard that exists today, but that didn't exist in 80s where a much stronger boys-will-be-boys culture existed. So how are we teaching our kids about what's acceptable and what's not? Teenagers have (and will) do stupid things. I got caught shoplifting at 15 and I'd be devastated if I lost a tremendous opportunity today, as a 45 year old woman, as a result. I'm trying to sort through the balance between second chances and living with the consequences of your choices. In this case, BTW, I'm not a Kavanaugh fan to begin with, so don't want to see him on the court. But I'm wondering if others are considering this and where you land on the issue. 51 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I regretted more as I got older because of what it suggested about me as a person, not so much because of the impact on the department store from which I stole. At the time, my family was filing bankruptcy and I thought the item was overpriced (so, yeah, I behaved like an entitled little brat), and in my mind, it was different to steal from a department store than from a local store. My friend and I both took an item, but I got caught, she didn't. My parents refused to come and get me and told them to send me to juvenile hall. I was bawling and scared and I think they knew that I was going to be punished at home, so they took pity on me and sent me home instead of to jail. Obviously, I never did it again, but I'll never know if I would have tried it again if I hadn't been caught. [ Reply | More ]

It really depends on how he behaves now (does he take responsibility and say, "I was a misogynist teenager in a misogynist culture, I was wrong, and I'm sorry" or does he try to lie his way out of it?) and whether his sexist, misogynist behavior continued through college, law school, and his career. I didn't want him (or any (R) nominee) on the SC long before stories about his youth came out. There is much inherently wrong with his past judgments & writings and the obvious direction in which he will vote (corporations = people, presidential immunity from investigations, and of course, reproductive rights). OP-I agree, I don't like him either. But I'm asking myself (objectively) when/how we hold someone accountable for something they did years and years ago. If he was 18 and had (consensual) sex with a 15 yo girlfriend, would we hold that against someone? Yes, laws are laws, but there is also context. I'm defending Kavanaugh, I'm speaking broadly about how and under what circumstances do we punish someone for bad behavior. [ Reply | More ]

We are holding him accountable to tell the truth about anything when he is questioned about it. He has lied under oath repeatedly, and is now displaying a pattern of lying and hiding information about his past personal life. For a man who has supposedly been preparing for this type of Public Service rule his entire life, he should be held to a much higher standard. And again, his policies are uniformly awful and he does not belong on the court because he has way too much personal and religious influence in his judgments. [ Reply | More ]

I was thinking about this: Someone who had to take a polygraph for a gov't job described the test. It was difficult and almost every part of your body is attached to a sensor. SC nominees don't have to take one. Interesting. Also, as my friend explained: the polygraph does not measure whether you are moral or not. We are all immoral. It measures where you draw that line. The questions asked is: what did you lie about? as opposed to have you ever lied? when you think about it, this man's moral "line" is at question and it ALWAYS was as he was going through this nomination process. We should have know already where his moral line was- he is a judge now. we can read his decisions and talk to his clerks but that doesn't answer that question. maybe all judges should have to have a polygraph? certainly, he should submit to one 9as Ford has). There are 5,000 kids there. Many are extremely motivated. Tech has significantly more poor students than Stuy and is more diverse (albeit still primarily Asian). There are also less motivated kids there. So your kid will be able to find whichever group he wants. In my experience, the motivated students at Tech may do even better in the college admissions process than at Stuy. Maybe because there are fewer geniuses to compete with. If the definition of "inferior" is "lower SHSAT score", then there will be more "inferior" students at Tech and Bronx Science. [ Reply | More ]

Dc's friends who went to Stuy are now at University of Chicago, Cornell, Williams, Harvard, Princeton (and know of students at almost every good college and some at SUNYs and less well-known small LAC). Dc's friends who went to Tech are now at University of Chicago, Cornell, Harvard, Brown, MIT, Amherst, and other good colleges and LAC and also CUNYs and SUNYs. There are probably similar numbers of highly motivated students at both, but since Tech is much larger it has far more happy to get A-s and Bs kids as well. My dc seems to want a biggish school, but touring Tech was a bit crazy. It’s just huge. Stuy seemed small in comparison. There are 850 kids (more or less) in each grade at Stuy. Stuy felt MUCH more intellectual. Tech seems VERY vocational - why is building a house a useful thing for studying architecture (my architect friends thought this was ridiculous). If you want to be a humanities major at Tech you have to take stupid classes like criminology and sociology. Meanwhile at Stuy you take classes like art and music appreciation that are in depth reviews of history of art. Just not comparable IMO. [ Reply | More ]

Most of the kids at Anderson are smart, so it’s rare to hear of anyone doing crazy SHSAT prep. Most kids start prepping during spring of 7th grade. Some take the summer off, but some prep all through the summer when they’re not away at camp. What is a grade grubber? I have no idea. Some kids are motivated and study and do all of their hw. They tend to get good grades. Some kids don’t care as much and they don’t do as well. I don’t know what you mean by “needs to get As.” My dc is a responsible student and gets high 90’s in his classes. He’s proud of that. Does that mean he “needs” high grades? I don’t even know what that means. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, I did not mean that to sound derogatory. I admire "motivated" students. I am just asking what the "unmotivated" students are like. Do they totally blow off school or are they just satisfied with getting a B? Here is my observation: If your kid is truly self-motivated, then he will be fine at Stuy (if he gets in) and fine at Tech (where he may have an easier time applying to college). If he is not self-motivated, he could really flounder at Stuy. I just think when you are talking about kids who are generally quite smart, people sometimes call kids "unmotivated" when they still go to class and do most of their homework and study a bit for tests. But those kids may just have a better perspective on life. [ Reply | More ]

When I say “less motivated,” I guess I do mean that they are ok with grades in the 80’s. They just don’t care about their grades as much as the “motivated” kids. That is what I thought. There will be some of those at Tech but there will also be many, many hundreds of kids who are first generation, working after school, taking care of their siblings, commuting hours each way to get there. Some of those kids are motivated enough to manage to have top grades on top of all their other obligations and others balance that with participating in extracurricular activities and while they want to do well, aren't "motivated" enough to strive for top grades and are okay if that means mid or high 80s mixed in with 90s. Anderson has very few poor students so - especially at Tech -- having most students disadvantaged rather than privileged will feel different. But that is actually a great plus to the school because it puts the privileged students "motivation" into perspective. [ Reply | More ]

This is like saying the University of Michigan is "inferior" to Vanderbilt University. One has 7,000 undergrads (Vanderbilt) and the other has 29,000 undergrads. Sure it may be "easier" to get in to Michigan but the top 30% (10,000 students) are probably as good if not better than the 7,000 students at Vanderbilt. Students go to Michigan because it doesn't bother them that also at the university there are students who got in with lower stats (but who are still very good). And sometimes they specifically choose Michigan over Vanderbilt because the size itself offers opportunities and they like the vibe and culture better. [ Reply | More ]

Like with any test - some don’t test that well, many were ESL (myself included) and would have scored higher had they been in the US longer. The kids at the top were brilliant. np. Good point. It will be interesting because the Discovery kids will have scored below the Tech cutoff. So, they may be like what was in the past the bottom of the class at Tech. That might create a sort of two class system at Stuy. I hope it doesn't happen for the kids' sake, but it probably will. Tech has the whole range of kids from Stuy level to the bottom of the range, so it would be a bit different. [ Reply | More ]

Last year's class was the last class where the admission to NEST was based only on the NEST+M test. The old test was basically a mini version of the SHSAT test. The numbers at NEST are going to drop this year, because of the more "holistic" admissions process. Think of it this way - the NEST kids used to be admitted by a test that preselected them on the ability to test really well on a high stakes test. Now, no more. [ Reply | More ]

My dc’s year there were many who ranked Bronx science above study. Maybe it was his year, but many thought of stuy as too much of a pressure cooker. He’s at Bronx science now and there’s so much homework it’s hard to believe there would be more at stuy. About 20 kids his year went to Bronx science. With that said, if you live a better commute to Brooklyn tech, I’d consider ranking that above Bronx science. My dc liked Bronx science and Brooklyn tech equally. He ranked stuy, Bronx science and then brooooklyn tech as 1-2-3. With that said, I think maybe one atudent his year went to Brooklyn tech. Anderson kids are funny about that school, plus almost none live in Brooklyn. I suspect maybe it’s a different situation at NEST. [ Reply | More ]

np. My kid ranked tech above science. The commute would have been awful and they didn't seem so different that the extra 45 min each way would have been worth it. Ranked stuy first and just missed the cutoff. Was disappointed for about 1 day until he found out who else at his school was going to tech. Now, he's happy not to be part of the rat race of stuy, but he has always been laid back. Had he been more competitive and ambitious, tech might bore him since there is not the urgency there that I would think there is at stuy and science. [ Reply | More ]

Have you heard the term, "narcissism of small differences"? This is pretty much the definition. The opportunities at both schools are very similar, and there are plenty of kids at Tech who made the cutoff for Stuy (or BS) but ranked Tech higher. And stop worrying about how your kid will react if he doesn't make the Stuy cutoff. He'll be fine at either school. I don’t want to enter into the prestige debate, but do want to give my two cents on how DC feel about the courses. Currently have a 10th grade DC at Tech. DC and I have been very impressed with level of physics and history teaching—tough, challenging, and good. Math is another story—is not DC’s strongest area and the teaching has been lackluster. Tests are, for DC at least, difficult. English has been a mixed bag—a bit too easy in my opinion and not requiring enough essay writing and reading. DC has friends at both Stuy and Science; DC did seem to get less homework than they did in 9th (this year, though, DC has a homework-loading AP Global teacher, so that no longer seems to be the case.) There are many motivated kids, but also some who are not. There is plenty of competition, though; DC says they are all aware of it and feel it. [ Reply | More ]

The debate team is active (and apparently a demanding EC). Not clear to me what the status of the paper is—possibly is only online? There is a literary/satire journal. One of DC’s main complaints about Tech, though, is that DC wants more arts. The majors are all very STEM oriented (Law and Society, to my mind, is actually not really humanities/arts, nor is Social Science.) DC is considering some of the science majors (Bio Science, Physics, etc.). [ Reply | More ]

I think it depends on what they mean by "humanities kids". It sounds as if they are basically putting all kids into two buckets: Humanities or STEM. But Social sciences are usually considered separate from humanities by definition, and in the case of the major, it focuses on anthropology, psychology, and sociology, not "humanities" areas such as languages, literature, history, arts, etc. And the Law major has several courses on, well, law, and forensics, again, not exactly true humanities subjects. This is just a DC preference issue: I am not maligning those majors, just saying my DC has a tough time finding one that fits. [ Reply | More ]

But you can take electives and core courses outside of your major. Is the complaint that those courses are not within the major requirements? You can be a Physics major and take Gothic Literature and Cultural Anthropology. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I guess you could, but that would be tough since most of the majors require you to take a set number of courses. So if you are a Physics major, for example, you have double period AP physics, plus another physics elective. Then you need to do all the regular required stuff--English, Math, History, and Foreign Language. A senior, yes, might be done with language and so would have a slot open to do something else, but that's probably it. [ Reply | More ]

If you had algebra in ms, you'll end up in some form of calculus in 12th--I guess a student could decide not to take it in favor of an elective, but I think that might harm them for college. And even with foreign language in MS, you need to do at least 3 years in high school to satisfy what many colleges expect. So I'm not seeing where the elective slots are coming from. [ Reply | More ]

Every Tech student is programmed for an English course in 11th and 12th grade. The more "humanities" focused ones take the AP Language and Literature and the other AP English class instead of regular English. Senior year students can also choose their English to be things like Science Fiction. I think you'll find that students at most specialized high schools do not have much time for "electives" their first 2 years. Agree with the person recommending HSAS. [ Reply | More ]

It's not just that. It's that she and her husband definitely knew that Kavanaugh's mentor and good friend Judge Alex Kozinski was a sexual harasser.
