I do to an extent. I'm fairly progressive about most things. But I was in some facebook groups of mothers that had kids my same age. We are UMC and stopped at 2 kids, mostly because we want to be able to provide them with certain things - travel, college without debt, etc. I see mothers in these groups (many are SAHM with husbands working as truck drivers, for example) who "just want another squishy baby!!1!!11!!1") and just keep procreating, because (their words) they're "just not ready to be done." I do get it. People have different priorities. Different strokes and all that. I try not to raise my eyebrows. Too hard. [ Reply | More ]

No they don't. Aetna is the one authorizing payment of the claims from the company's account. They don't provide the company with info on an identified employee's claims unless there's some sort of appeal initiated by the employee and the employee consents. [ Reply | More ]

Most large corporations self insure. The company pays all medical expense claims up to a certain limit. Once the limit has been reached, the company's stop loss insurance kicks. The stop loss insurance company is responsible for amounts over that limit. [ Reply | More ]

Yes - a former neighbor that I was friends with on FB. It's weird because when I knew her she was by most outward accounts a "normal" NYC type (looked/dressed stylish, was educated, had a good job, married to a normal guy, good conversationalist, etc.) They moved and then she started getting kookie a few years back, but in a holistic medicine/health nut kind of way. Then recently she became an anti-vax/environmental conspiracy theorist, relatively harmless but increasingly annoying on FB. I unfriended her last week - she was the first person I heard the whole "crisis actor" thing from and I was disgusted. [ Reply | More ]

I met a girl at camp the summer before I turned 13. We stayed in touch and the next summer my parents bought me a ticket to go see her in Florida and stay with her for a month. She lived with her single mother, age 40, and her mother's 20 year old boyfriend. The second I got there, the mother and the boyfriend took off and left us in her little bungalow with $40 to buy cereal, milk, bread and peanut butter or whatever we needed to get by. No car, we walked to a convenience store if we wanted anything. We watched TV all day, found her mom's massive porn stash, and I never told my parents we were alone that whole time. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Do you think you got an accurate picture of what your DC's school was like from tours and other research? Or has school been different from what you expected? I've only done this with respect to preschools -- I could tell each school had a different feel and philosophy. However, after DC started, my perceptions of the preschool I picked changed. It's a little more academic than I would have liked, though I still like it. I'm just wondering if it's just the case that you can't learn everything about a school from the tour or if some people are just more perceptive than others; maybe I need to improve my tour skills when it comes time to apply for K! 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Took DD to London & Paris when she was 5. She loved it - key was to be aware of when she was hungry and when she was tired - jet lag is much harder on little kids. Always had snacks on hand - even if it just a ziplock of grapes to avoid a meltdown. Took everything day by day, very few "set plans" that couldn't be rearranged if DD really just needed to spend the afternoon at a playground. Be prepared to change plans at the last second, take lots of photos and enjoy yourselves. [ Reply | More ]

This is all good advice. I went to Paris and Amsterdam with DD when she was 4. She loved it. I did a lot of research on kid friendly activities to mix in. You have to have a flexible mid set. Kids are interested in everything then so it is a lot of fun. The fact is they don't remember anything when they are little but it still opens their eyes to the world and made my DD a travel lover. We found that books that talked about museums for kids made her more interested. I remember we read some Gaspardt books and some kids museum books. It made it fun to hunt for things we read about. We did so Eurodisney from Paris when she seem to have had enough. That was unplanned but she love it [ Reply | More ]

I'm the one with 3yo going to spain, and I'll answer you here. He TOTALLY gets it. Focus on the little things that are different and special. In Amsterdam he rode balance bikes with our friend's child and saw all the other people on bikes. He tried Dutch cheese ("new" and "old"). He learned a few Dutch words and rode a tram, and loved validating the ticket in the machine. He loved the windmills. In Germany they have working playground construction equipment in the sand pits. We saw a real shipyard and walked through the old pedestrian tunnel under the river in Hamburg and came out the other side--that blew his mind, lol, that we were under the water. There was other, obviously kid-friendly stuff like the model train museum, but it's the little stuff that is exciting, IMO. Now he's almost 3 and we have a globe and show him all the places and how the airplanes go. [ Reply | More ]

I took my 4.5 year old down to NYC (we live in Vermont now) last year for 4-5 days. I had a lot of grand plans but, to be honest, the best time he had was playing on the playgrounds and scrambling over the rocks in central park. And, ya know... a kid can do that anywhere. I think just be realistic in that (at least in my experience) the actual international bit is more for you and less for your child. That said, make it exciting. Buy some kids books in advance to get your child excited about places you may visit, sights you may see. Maybe teach a few basic Spanish words. [ Reply | More ]

My mother left us. My dad had to finish a stint overseas in the army, so my dear aunt took me in for 2 years. [ Reply | More ]

For all ages: I played outside, making up creative games. I rode my bike, played piano, went for walks, played with my dog. Some neighborhood friends but my mother was crazy (really) and didn't let me wander much. Occasional movies or television. Our town had a wonderful fair and parade at the end of May, still does to this day. We had a rec center, where we took classes like swimming, tennis and had free swim in the afternoon, 3 nice pools. One week of horse camp, once when I was 14, once when I was 15. I only worked during the school year below 19. Once I was in college, I worked in the summer. I think I should go back to this model with my DD. [ Reply | More ]

What would the responses be for today's kids? Does anyone work summers as a teen anymore? Or is it just camp and hanging out? [ Reply | More ]
